Be sufficient for yourself. It's sad that the industrial revolution has made the state no more self-sufficient. In ancient Greek times, it was just individual - family - village - polis. And a polis was the usual self-sufficient unit. Therefore citizens fought for the polis. They were not sufficient without the polis. But now, the worldwide industrial-technological system has replaced the polis in that sense. It is the self-sufficient unit of today. Instead of citizens, now we call people "humanity".
